Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy Statement

Scarborough Sixth Form College cares for the wellbeing of its staff and students and also recognises its responsibilities to comply with the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and other relevant Health and Safety Regulations. To ensure that the College fulfils its duties effectively in respect of staff, students, visitors and the general public it will, so far as is reasonably practicable:

  • Conduct its business in compliance with all existing Health and Safety Regulations and make sure that activities carried out by the College are safe and in accordance with appropriate approved codes of safe working practice.
  • Install and maintain measures to safeguard the health, safety and wellbeing of all those who may be exposed to risk through its activities including vulnerable groups.
  • Ensure that risks are properly assessed by competent persons and are adequately controlled.
  • Identify and implement the preventative and protective measures highlighted by the assessments.
  • Maintain safe equipment and safe systems of work and study.
  • Prevent accidents and cases of work - related ill health.
  • Provide personal protective equipment
  • Ensure safe handling and use of substances.
  • Ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks, and to give them adequate training.
  • Provide the necessary information, clear, instruction, training and supervision to all students and staff.
  • Implement emergency procedures, including evacuation in case of fire or other significant incident.
  • Consult employees and students on joint action required regarding health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Maintain, review and amend, whererequired, its policies and publish the contents and/or revisions.

Whilst the Corporation and Principal retain overall responsibility for health, safety and wellbeing matters, all employees and students are required to ensure that procedures for safe working practices are observed and that they take reasonable care for the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others.

All employees have to:

• co-operate with managers on health and safety matters;

• not interfere with anything provided to safeguard their health and safety;

• take reasonable care of their own health and safety and of others, and;

• report all health and safety concerns to an appropriate person

This policy will be supplemented by other procedures and guidance notes arising from health, safety and wellbeing legislation and good practice; and will be reviewed annually. Specific responsibilities associated with health, safety and wellbeing issues are covered by a separate statement.
